A week before his death, Karl Lagerfeld revealed that he had chosen Palermo to co-design and style a collection for his namesake label. Isabel Toledo, the Cuban-born designer who became a favorite of former First Lady Michelle Obama, died of breast cancer Monday in a New York hospital. She was 59. Her death was confirmed by her husband, Ruben Toledo. She and Ruben Toledo were a husband-and-wife team who worked closely together in several fields of fashion. Her designs combined sophisticated simplicity and meticulous craftsmanship, while Ruben Toledo is a fashion artist whose drawings have appeared in many publications and murals. Born in Cuba on April 9. 1960, Isabel Toledo moved to West New York, N.J., where she attended high school and met Ruben Toledo, whom she married in 1984. She attended the Fashion Institute of Technology and Parsons School of Design, and presented her first collection in 1985. In 1998, she stopped presenting biannual collections and chose to create on her own schedule. During her career, she also served as creative director of Anne Klein from 2006 to 2007, and later designed a special size collection for Lane Bryant. “What I want is to encourage kids to take on challenges and risk especially when you’re young and at the beginning of your career. We’re too safe. Risk everything for what you love to do and the rest will follow” she was quoted saying in 2012. Toledo designed the lemongrass yellow wool lace shirt dress with matching overcoat which Michelle Obama wore to the first inauguration of Barack Obama in 2009. The industry standard is an average of $5.1 million in monthly owned media MIV, according to @launchmetrics. @nyxcosmetics regularly generates more than three times that metric, with an average of $17.3 million in monthly owned media MIV. The brand has 38 local Instagram accounts, including ones for Arabia, U.S. and Brazil. A single post on NYX’s United Arab Emirates account garners an average of $22,000 in MIV. “Owned media is the perfect channel for brands to connect with their customer and help what we like to call increase share of wallet,” said @alisonbringe, chief marketing officer at Launchmetrics. “It costs $4 to convert a new customer, $1 to convert an existing customer, and the people who are following your brand are already an engaged audience that you know has some affinity for the products you’re selling and what your brand represents. Building out a bespoke, well-thought owned media program means that brands can speak directly to their customers. The highest echelon of the fashion community received four influencers at its most exclusive event this week. @camilacoelho and YouTubers @jamescharles and @iisuperwomanii made their Met Gala debuts as guests of @dvf and @youtube, respectively. @lizakoshy, who previously played host on the red carpet for vogue.com in 2018, also attended as YouTube’s guest. Coelho, Charles, Singh and Koshy weren’t the first influencers to grace the Met Gala carpet — @chiaraferragni Ferragni did that back in 2015, but the number of them this year — modest, still, in comparison to their celebrity counterparts — is a definite change. Microinfluencers, aka influencers with between 10,000 and 100,000 followers, are steadily gaining popularity in fashion and beauty, according to @launchmetrics‘ annual State of Influencer Marketing report. The 2019 report surveyed marketing, communications and public relations professionals from the fashion, luxury and beauty sectors, as well as influencers. Of those surveyed, 45.5 percent said they prefer working with microinfluencers. In a statement, Michael Jais, chief executive officer of Launchmetrics, declared influencer marketing more than just a trend.
