I considered not posting these because they are so fucking hard to look at, but even if I don’t, I’m still ultra aware of what was going on this time last year. Josh was in a nursing home where he received horribly inadequate care, and I pulled him out of there after only one week. On December 15, 2018, which was a Saturday, my friend @thiscriplife and I brought him dinner, and she dressed up like Chewbacca to cheer him up. He was actually doing pretty good at this point; of course, I honestly never lost hope until about a week before he passed away. I had seen him pull through things that I thought he would never come back from, so a part of me wanted to believe he was invincible. I remember when I started this instagram it was just to share my blog about infertility. It’s grown and changed so much but on a day like today I feel like it’s important to share that I’m struggling The house down BOOTS. The day that should have been. If it was up to me today would be your birthday. We would be running around getting ready to celebrate all four of you turning SIX years old. The due date. When you are struggling to get pregnant and after years of trying when it finally happens there is something about your due date. That specific date assigned to you. The date you’ll get to see your babies, the date you’ll get to hold them. The date your life will change forever. The date that after years of tears and loss everything will finally make sense. On THIS day everything will be as it should, your fairytale will be complete. But for some, it never comes. Life is not a fairytale or carefully planned Pinterest board. December 15th is just another day filed under the “If only” section. There will always be apart of me that feels like I failed my precious four by not getting them to this day six years ago. That if I was better, healthier, nicer, thinner, sweeter, smarter, something MORE it would have made a difference. Even tho I know that isn’t the truth it’s how I feel. Instead of the day you came into the world and made everything more beautiful it becomes a day of failure. The day I couldn’t get you all to. Have you ever felt lonely? Thinking back, what was going on in your lived experience? Or now? Feelings of loneliness might be a trauma response to feeling unsafe. . . . While possibly not always a trauma response, feelings of loneliness are common. So much so that in some circles there are questions of a public health crisis. Researcher and professor John Cacioppo studied loneliness for 21years, in particular perceived isolation which translates into loneliness. . . Statistics show that 1 in 4 people (likely higher) report feelings of loneliness. Perceived isolation or loneliness impacts us on an endocrinological and genetic level impacting immunity and resistance to disease activating your brain to go into self-preservation mode (think fight, flight, freeze). This means, when a person is in a state of perceived isolation or loneliness their ability to read people and to participate in what’s called reciprocity in communication is impacted (increasing feelings of loneliness). . . Think of reciprocity in communication as: how one interprets body language, posture, tone of voice, and eyes. When someone is in self-preservation mode (triggered or activated) it is signaling to the brain that a person is in a type of danger—think of loneliness as the psychological counterpart to physical pain. We avoid what may cause us harm. Loneliness contributes to an evolutionary confirmation bias that a person in order to stay “safe” must focus on their own self-interest furthering their feelings of perceived isolation and reduction in reciprocity of communication. While this is an evolutionary response to keep us safe, in present day makes it more difficult to remove self from perceived isolation or loneliness. . . Bringing us to—How can I decrease loneliness? . . Decreasing loneliness isn’t as simple as communication skills, social engagement or social support. Rather, changing perception of how persons experience loneliness are perceiving other people and re-training the brain & nervous system. John Cacioppo explained loneliness as being on the outside looking in. Often we confirm our loneliness by staying on the outside as a way to protect ourselves... . . Cont 👇🏻
